There’s a very vague narrative in the game about a Starship Troopers inspired future, where people are bombarded by overtly patriotic, jingoistic propaganda about fighting to spread democracy across the galaxy. Thanks to this procedural generation, it’s a game designed around “watercooler” moments. While there’s a decent but not plentiful amount of variety in enemies, planet types or mission objectives, Helldivers’ procedurally generated maps and encounters offer a great deal of variation, and near limitless replayability. Helldivers has a very basic structure to its gameplay, but you’ll be climbing into that drop pod again and again, because the gameplay on offer here is some of the best of its type. All while being incredibly simple, yet endlessly satisfying.īroken down, Helldivers sees you selecting which of three enemies to face, climbing into a drop pod and landing on a procedurally generated planet, completing missions to gain XP, upgrading your weapons and equipment, or unlocking new stuff, then doing it all again. Where most every other twin-stick shooter in existence focuses on letting players loose with near infinite ammo and resources, against a never ending supply of bad guys to mow down, Helldivers is content to keep the endlessly spawning enemies, but limit your ammo, and throw in the curveball of letting you stress over potential friendly fire incidents. Helldivers is a game with an extremely addictive gameplay loop.
Either alone or as part of a team of up to 4 other players, you drop into intense combat situations against three different alien factions, fighting to spread democracy and freedom throughout the galaxy, and doing your best not to accidentally gun your teammates down. You play as a member of the titular military organisation, a fighting force that stands for justice, liberty, and delivering swift and brutal death to encroaching alien menaces. Helldivers is a chaotic, online focused twin-stick shooter from the development team behind the equally as chaotic Magicka.
